Toy Tokyo by Manami Okazaki
Distorted, over and under saturated, blurry and unpredictable, these are the photographs that cheap 'toy' cameras produce. However in Tokyo, a city that has a long history of camera manufacturing, these cameras are extremely popular and low-fi photography has become a wide spread hobby. The theme of this photo collection is Tokyo, a city of great contradictions, where temples are wedged in by skyscrapers and traditional cafes sit alongside high fashion nightclubs. Featuring photographs and photographers from all areas of society.Manami Okazaki is an author who has written twelve novels about Japanese culture. Her work has appeared in the Japan Times, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, South China Morning Post, Lonely Planet, Transit, and other international publications. For over ten years, she has collected and written extensively on kokeshi and the Tohoku region. In the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, she was active in volunteer and charity work, organising Kokeshi events in London, Paris, Rome, and Los Angeles with the goal of assisting the people of Tohoku.
