With language that mixes violence and poetry, this crime novel tells the life of Mexican mobsters and drug dealers and their relationship with the outside world in the midst of an epidemic. The action takes place over the course of a single day, in which a much-desired woman, Thrice Blonde, meets The Rescuer, a man who embodies all fears and contradictions and whose words seem to heal everything. Themes of tragedy, liberation, family, sex, and death intertwine with social elements distinct to life south of the border in this intense story. La acci n acontece durante una sola jornada, en la que una mujer deseada, La Tres Veces Rubia, se encuentra con El Alfaqueque, un hombre quien encarna todos los miedos y contradicciones y cuyas palabras parecen sanar todo. Los temas de la tragedia, la redenci n, la familia, el sexo y la muerte se entrelazan con elementos sociales distintos de la vida al sur de la frontera en esta historia intensa.
Yuri Herrera was born in Actopan, Mexico, in 1970. He received his PhD for Hispanic Language and Literature from UC Berkeley. Signs Preceding the End of the Worldis his English-language debut novel. It was shortlisted for the Rü¾Œ¶˜¼mulo Gallegos Prize and is being published in several languages. His latest novel, The Transmigration of Bodies, is forthcoming in English from And Other Stories in 2016. He is currently teaching at Tulane University in New Orleans. Lisa Dillman is based in Atlanta, Georgia, where she translates Spanish, Catalan and Latin American writers and teaches at Emory University. Her recent translations include The Frost on His Shoulders by Lorenzo Mediano, Op Oloop by Juan Filloy (longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award), Me, Who Dove into the Heart of the World by Sabina Berman and Rain Over Madrid by Andrü¾Ž–”¼s Barba. She is obsessed with words, running, cooking and her dog, Maya.
