A Traveller's Companion to Prague by Jan Kaplan
Eye-witness accounts of the sermons of Jan Hus, Czech forerunner of the German Reformation; the Prague Defenestrations, beginning in 1419; the première of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni in 1787; and the invasions and political upheavals of the 20th century are all included in this remarkable collection. Beautiful, turbulent Prague has for centuries been an inspiration to artists and writers, inhabitants and visitors. Czech-born Jan Kaplan's selection from letters, diaries, memoirs and anecdotes brings to life both the city's exhilarating creative power and the many tragic events played out in its streets throughout history.
Rich but digestible anthology.. fascinating, informative, occasionally horrifying and often very funny ...occasionally reads like an outline for a Terry Gilliam film ... Pythonesque ... providing an eclectic overview that can only add to any trip to the city. * The Times Literary Supplement *
