Mary Kingsley (1862-1900) was an English author and explorer best known for Adventures in West Africa, one of two novels she published about her experience in the region. During her lifetime, she traveled to Africa three times, the last of which was to South Africa, where she acquired typhoid as a volunteer nurse and died during the Boer War.
