Rudolf Ditzen's pen name was Hans Fallada (1893-1947), and his writings were international blockbusters on par with those of his countrymen Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse. When the Nazis came to power, he chose to remain in Germany, and when he was pressured to publish anti-Semitic works, he had a nervous breakdown. He was committed to a Nazi mental institution, where he composed The Drinker in secret. He wrote his final two novels, The Nightmare and Alone in Berlin, right after the war, but died before they could be published.
