The Triumphant Cat by Walter Payne

Here, in facsimile, is a cultural history of the cat, handwritten in the artistic calligraphy of past ages, and ornamented with colour illustrations. So who is Marmaduke Skidmore, the editor? 20 years ago, Marmaduke the cat, and his friend, the bon viveur Walter Payne, found themselves together in Chester when Marmaduke's owners, Ian and Celia Skidmore, went abroad. They decided to compile a history, in prose and verse, of the domestic cat as described by writers through the ages, starting with the Egyptians and Ancient Chinese and ending with T.S. Eliot, Don Marquis and James Thurber. When they had finished, Walter Payne wrote it all down in his italic hand, and they added some pictures.
