Jay Shafer is a small-space expert who is well-known around the world. He is an architect and urban planner who specializes in sustainable architecture. He has given numerous talks on these topics for organizations such as New College's Eco-Dwelling program, the Boston Architectural Center, and the University of Iowa's School of Art and Art History, where he was an Adjunct Assistant Professor for over a decade. Jay's designs and essays have appeared in Fine Homebuilding, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNN, Oprah, and This Old House, among other publications, books, and television shows. He currently resides in Sebastopol, California, in an 89-square-foot home he built himself.

Shafer's first book, The Little House Book, was self-published in 2000 and later edited with Fox Chapel Publishing in 2010. For the last ten years, it has sold tens of thousands of copies as an underground self-publishing hit.
