Lynne?Hjelmgaard' s?The Turpentine Tree ?offers ?portraits of family, friends and relationships - of? Hjelmgaard' s uprooted life, including a life at sea, subsequent displacement, widowhood and search for connections.
A former art and early childhood teacher, weaver and sailor, Lynne Hjelmgaard, who was born in New York City, has been writing poetry for more than twenty-five years. When her husband, who was Danish, passed away in Copenhagen in 2006, Lynne returned to the countries they had lived in together, including Paris and Rome where she was in residence at the Danish Academy and wrote the poems that later appeared in ‘The Ring’. In 2008 she met the poet Dannie Abse. She travelled with him to poetry events, also reading her poems with him. He became her mentor and partner until his death in 2014. She is the author of five poetry collections including ‘A Boat Called Annalise’ and ‘A Second Whisper’.
