Paula MacLeod shows you how to make a cute collection of sugar sporties! These sporty modelling paste characters are the perfect cake toppers for someone special who loves to get active. Choose between a tennis player, swimmer, golfer, footballer, gymnast or even a windsurfer. The constituent parts of each sportsperson are shown with the step-by-step instructions, and annotated for clarity, then each finished sporty is beautifully photographed. Only a few simple tools and techniques are used, so anyone can have a go at making these treats. Sport lovers will be thrilled to see any of these fun characters on top of a celebratory cake. In this Olympic year why not decorate your cakes with a sporting theme? Here are twenty sports represented by delightful sugar paste figures all doing what they do best --or in some cases worst! I like the humor in this book, as the figures are not always shown winning but having fun and having a go; ideal for amateurs. This is not a book where each page shows an alternative idea, but each page instead has detailed instructions (rather small print), a photo of the finished piece and a very helpful photographed illustration of all the components, laid out and numbered. The numbers do not seem to relate to anything on the page, but it is handy to be able to lay them all out and count them, or maybe make notes. The finished pieces show helpfully how to display them, with blue piping gel "water", a horse's jump made from Shredded Wheat and a row of chocolate fingers, brown sugar "sand" etc. Many sports are represented, from team games like football, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, etc., to sports like gymnastics, synchronized swimming, golf, tennis, judo, windsurfing etc. The figures are not hard to make -- anybody who played with plasticine as a child should already know the basics -- and the look is very effective. A good book for any sugarcrafter but simple enough to appeal to beginners.
