He served as Commanding Officer of the SAS Regiment, Commander Special Forces, Director General Corporate Planning - Army, and Commander Northern Command until retiring in 1999. He spent seven years in executive positions with the Multiplex Group before retiring in 1999, and since then he has volunteered in the Military History Division of the Australian War Memorial. He is a Royal Military College, Duntroon, University of Western Australia (BA Honours in History), Army Staff College, United States Armed Forces Staff College, and Australian College of Defence and Strategic Studies graduate.
