Under Auntie's Skirts by Alec Weeks
Forty years after England's 1966 World Cup victory, this book contains the fascinating and revealing memoirs of the man who brought us the historic TV coverage. "Under Auntie's Skirts" is the memoir of one of the BBC's leading sports producers of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Having joined the corporation during World War Two, Alec Weeks rose through the ranks of radio, working on classic shows like "ITMA" and "Children's Hour". His memoirs of some of those early encounters beautifully evoke the style of the period and the various characters who worked for "Auntie" (the BBC) during the pioneering days. In the 1950s, Weeks moved into television production and began to specialise in sport - football in particular: he was involved in "Match of the Day" from its inception and was responsible for producing the coverage of six World Cups from 1966 onwards. His memories of those events offer unique, behind-the-scenes insights into the way those programmes were made and the personalities who made them. Conversations are recalled in detail as well as the incidents, humorous and bizarre, that shaped the coverage that was broadcast to the British people. Weeks is equally perceptive on other events such as the many Winter and Summer Olympics with which he was involved or the boxing bouts he covered early on in his career. This book is being published on the 40th anniversary of England's 1966 World Cup victory. It also includes behind the scenes at "Match of the Day."
Alec Weeks joined the BBC in 1941 as an office junior. He soon moved into radio production, working on classic shows such as ITMA and Children's Hour, before moving into television in the 1950s. He quickly found his niche, as a producer of sports programmes, working on pioneering shows such as Sportsview and Grandstand. Then, in 1964, he took a leading role in producing a new football highlights programme, Match of the Day, on which he worked for the next 23 years. He also produced Winter and Summer Olympic Games, from Innsbruck in 1964 to Los Angeles 20 years later, and football World Cups, from England's famous triumph in 1966 to Mexico in 1986. Weeks retired in 1987 and lives in Brighton.
