Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) was born in Gamaliya, a busy Cairo neighborhood. He penned approximately 40 novels, as well as hundreds of short stories and screenplays. In 1988, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Denys Johnson-Davies has translated modern Arabic literature into over thirty books, including The Essential Tawfiq al-Hakim (AUC Press, 2008) and The Essential Yusuf Idris (AUC Press, 2009). In 2007, he was awarded the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Person of the Year in the Field of Culture.
