The feel-good place to buy books

Understanding the Contemporary Middle East by Jillian Schwedler
The third edition of Understanding the Contemporary Middle East includes two entirely new chapters, one on religion and politics and one on the economies of the Middle East, as well as a greatly expanded discussion of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In addition, all of the chapters have been fully updated. Maps, photographs, and tables of basic political data enhance the text, which has already made its place as the best available introduction to the region.
Jillian Schwedler is associate professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her publications include Faith in Moderation: Islamist Parties in Jordan and Yemen, winner of the 2007 Best Book Award of the American Political Science Association Democratization Section. The late Deborah J. Gerner was professor of political science at the University of Kansas. She was author of One Land, Two Peoples: The Conflict Over Palestine, as well as numerous articles dealing with the international relations and domestic politics of the Middle East.
