Unhyphenated Identities by Aydın Bayad

Across Europe, postmigrants face pressure from two directions at once: host societies that question their loyalty, and homelands that seek to reclaim it. The result is a steady erosion of dual or hyphenated identity – the capacity to feel genuinely at home in two cultures. Drawing on interviews, large-scale surveys, and newly collected data, Aydın Bayad traces that erosion among Turkish and Post-Soviet communities in Germany. He introduces a new framework for understanding how people interpret rejection to uncover the psychological and political forces that reshape belonging over time. Timely, interdisciplinary, and grounded in lived experience, this volume offers a new perspective on identity, migration, and cohesion in a polarised Europe.

Aydın Bayad is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG) at Universität Bielefeld. He earned his PhD from the Faculty of Educational Science at Universität Bielefeld. His research examines how minorities navigate and challenge majority exclusion, with a focus on discrimination, ethnonational identification, political socialisation, and value change.
