We are heartbroken to learn about the passing of renowned novelist W. Stevens, Richard. His death is clearly a huge loss for the technical community, but it is also a personal one for us. Rich was a skilled colleague as well as a dear friend who will be sorely missed. We send our condolences to his family.

UNIX Network Programming (1990, 1998, 1999), Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment (1992), and TCP/IP Illustrated (1994, 1995, 1996) are among his best-known works. Richard was born in the copper-mining town of Luanshya in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), where his father worked.

Salt Lake City, Hurley, New Mexico, Washington, DC, and Phalaborwa, South Africa were all destinations for the family. Richard went to Waynesboro, Virginia's Fishburne Military Academy. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in science. In 1973, he received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan.

(1978), as well as a Ph.D. (1982) from the University of Arizona in Systems Engineering. He relocated to Tucson in 1975 and worked as a computer programmer at Kitt Peak National Observatory until 1982. He was Vice President of Computer Services at Health Systems International in New Haven, CT, from 1982 to 1990, before returning to Tucson in 1990.

He worked as an author and consultant in this city. During the 1970s, he was also an ardent pilot and a part-time flying instructor. Sally Hodges Stevens, his beloved wife of 20 years; three wonderful children, Bill, Ellen, and David; sister, Claire Stevens of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Bob and wife Linda Stevens of Dallas, TX; nieces Laura, Sarah, Collette, Christy; and nephew, Brad are all survivors. His parents, Royale J. and Royale J., died before he was born.

Helen resided in Tucson from 1991 to 1997, and Royale attended Tucson High School in the early 1930s while his father was being treated for tuberculosis at the Desert Sanitorium (now TMC). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard's name to Habitat for Humanity, 2950 E. Tucson, AZ 85713, 22nd Street

Richard's memorial ceremony will be place at St. On Tuesday, September 7th, at 12:00 noon, at Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church. There will be a reception in the Church's Murphy Gallery following the service. Please dress brightly for the service; Richard was a big fan of bright colors.
