Unlocking the Gospels by Jeremy Corley

In Unlocking the Gospels Jeremy Corley offers a clear guide for beginners, drawn from the 1993 Pontifical Biblical Commission document, The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church. There are many possible approaches to biblical interpretation, and if rightly used, each method can help to illuminate the biblical text. In Unlocking the Gospels Corley illustrates these methods by applying them to the gospel story of the widow's mites (Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4). He encourages students of the Bible to explore a diversity of approaches to gain insights into the riches in the scriptural text. He concludes that none of the methods of interpretation is an end in itself, but rather that all the methods are intended to serve the principal aim, which is the deepening of faith. Jeremy Corley, PhD, is a Scripture lecturer at Ushaw College, Durham, England.
Corley's clear and succinct demonstration puts flesh on these various methods and will no doubt be helpful to beginning studentsThe Bible Today
For anyone who wants to enrich his or her understanding of the Gospels, this booklet is a good tool to begin with.PAX
This book makes the science of biblical interpretation available to every reader of the Bible. Jeremy Corley illustrates the major exegetical approaches to the Gospels by examining the narrative of the widow's mites (Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4). In so doing, he exposes the richness of the biblical text to anyone who considers it from such a diversity of viewpoints. This book is essential for introductory courses on the Gospels and the New Testament; for all religious educators, leaders of RCIA and sacramental preparation programs, lectors, deacons, priests, and pastoral workers; and for anyone who practices lectio divina or who animates his and her prayer life by regular reading of Scripture. Anyone who reads this book will appreciate 'the Interpretation of the Bible in the Church.'
