Unsympathetic Magic by Laura Resnick

.gripping and enticing. --Crash and Burn Reviews

Acting jobs don't grow on fire escapes, so struggling actress Esther Diamond is outraged when her guest role as a hooker on controversial TV drama The Dirty Thirty is jeopardized by zombies, angry spirits, and a voodoo curse. Meanwhile, the talented teens Esther is coaching at a Harlem cultural center are also being attacked by the sinister supernatural power that's spreading through Manhattan. Since the show must go on, Esther boldly helps her friend, the 350-year-old sorcerer Dr. Maximillian Zadok, combat the Evil forces at work--all while attempting to salvage her love life with her would-be lover, Detective Connor Lopez. But will Esther's courage backfire and end up leading her to become a human sacrifice on the altar of the sinister supernatural powers that are taking over New York City?

Unsympathetic Magic is the exciting third installment of the Esther Diamond series.
"Plenty of humor, action, magic, and a bit of romance make this urban fantasy a sure favoriteDon’t miss this exceptional series." —SciFiChick.com "

"Unsympathetic Magic by Laura Resnick may be one of the funniest, wittiest, most intriguing books I’ve read in a while. Even if I weren’t fascinated by Vodou and delicious detectives, I would have fallen in love with this book." —Bitten by Books

"...a tightly woven, madcap dash of a story that manages to weave religious practices, seedy television, hilarious situational humor, snappy dialogue, mythical stinky creatures, and an utterly believable cast of characters into a tapestry that you’ll have a hard time taking your eyes off of." —Gravetells

Laura Resnick was born in the city of Chicago in the state of Illinois. She was thrown by horses, mauled by dogs, and terrified by the Resnicks' infamous exploding water well as a youngster, which helped her prepare appropriately for her future in publishing. Resnick went on to Georgetown University to study French, Italian, and linguistics, graduating with honors. She spent the next few years tramping about the Old World, looking at wonderful art, working in France, and eventually ending up on a kibbutz in Israel. She studied acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in London and taught English at the University of Palermo in Italy for a tumultuous but rewarding year.

Resnick had sold a dozen romantic novels by the time she was thirty, all but one of them published under the pen name Laura Leone, and Romantic Times magazine had voted her the greatest new writer in her field. She then embarked on a cross-African trek. The award-winning nonfiction book A Blonde In Africa tells you everything you need to know about that 8-month voyage. Resnick was in Africa when she earned the John W.

In appreciation of the short stories she had been writing, she received the Campbell Award for Best New Science Fiction/Fantasy Writer. She created her first fantasy novel, In Legend Born, after warming up her muscles in this way, a effort that made traveling Africa overland appear easy in comparison.
