The feel-good place to buy books

Urban Transport without the hot air by Steve Melia
This book questions the misunderstandings that have influenced politicians, transport planners, and the general public, asking: Are governments trying to get us out of our cars? Is better public transport the solution to congestion in cities? What effect would more house building have on traffic and transport? Using seven British and European cities as case studies, Sustainable Transport Without the Hot Air finds solutions. Interviews with political leaders, such as Ken Livingstone; transport planners; and campaigners, including Bill Bryson, reveal some surprising conclusions to remedy urban transport problems.
Like the whole ’Without the Hot Air’ series, Urban Transport is a sensible, sober, highly readable, most welcome addition to a vital debate-- Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing
Reducing our dependence on motor traffic is not only good for the environment, it’s good for us too – and this exciting, evidence-based analysis shows where and how it’s already being done. -- Caroline Lucas, Green Party
Phil Goodwin’s Foreword raises the question of how we should sequence the components of a sustainable transport policy, if unable to afford all at once. To this I would add the question how we can achieve better correspondence between housing and transport policies. The achievement of this book is to raise such matters in an accessible (and affordable!) format – and to cast significant light on where the answers might be found. -- Alan Wenban-Smith * Local Transport Today *
A fresh perspective on urban transport – and a good look at London’s progress -- Sir Peter Hendy, Commissioner of Transport for London

Dr Steve Melia lectures in transport and planning at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He has advised two government departments on how to achieve more sustainable transport and helped with the transport planning of the London Olympic Park. The ideas in this book began while cycling 5,000 miles across three summers and seven European countries, studying cities making progress on transport problems and improving the urban environment.
