Venice by Matteo Varia

Venice is a city like no other on earth. With its ancient origins now lost and long forgotten, all that the modern visitor has with which to understand and appreciate Venice is the magnificent artistic and architectural heritage of the great city itself. It is this fabulous legacy that "Venice: City of Art" seeks to define and present through a collection of remarkable new photographs. The book offers a portrait of the city through the ages: from its Gothic and Renaissance heydays through to the Neoclassical and Romantic eras. It features not only the great landmarks scattered around and beyond Piazza San Marco but also everyday scenes down little alleyways and narrow canals. Offering elegant and appealing vistas on scenes both familiar and little-known, and with a text that provides a fresh and approachable introduction to the history of the city, its builders and artists, its Doges and citizens, this book will be treasured by all those for whom the city of Venice holds a special place in their affections.
