Veronica Mars: An Original Mystery by Rob Thomas by Rob Thomas

From Rob Thomas, the creator of the television series and movie phenomenon Veronica Mars, comes the first book in a thrilling mystery series that picks up where the feature film left off.

Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She's traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.

Now it's spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is no simple missing person's case; the house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica's past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.

In Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas has created a groundbreaking female detective who's part Phillip Marlowe, part Nancy Drew, and all snark. With its sharp plot and clever twists, The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line will keep you guessing until the very last page.

Before working with educational foundations, Jennifer Graham spent 20 years in education as a teacher, principal, and professor. Her purpose is to make a difference in people's lives via education by finding new approaches to help kids succeed. Jennifer's enthusiasm for teaching led her to specialize in inner-city and third-world education, allowing her to teach in four nations, three continents, and three states. Her favorite role was as the principal of a K-12 grade Disciplinary Alternative School, where she was able to create an climate that promoted collaborative learning and personal responsibility. Graham taught lower and upper division special education subjects as an adjunct professor.

The distinction of leadership is bestowed upon those who like serving others. Jennifer never says no to a new project, whether it's conducting a Rotary service team to the Philippines, coordinating a downtown revitalization initiative, establishing a Botanical Garden, hosting foreign exchange students, advising entrepreneurs, or leading a Youth Leadership Camp. She refers to herself as a window jumper since she is the first to jump when doors of opportunity open. She regularly lands on her buttocks, whether she goes out feet first or dives in, but she has the fortitude to brush herself off and be grateful for the flight time.

Her father, a Pan Am pilot, began working on this book in the 1980s. He wasn't able to acquire enough information to start narrating the narrative until after the company had folded and the court cases had been resolved. Jennifer and her father traveled to the University of Miami in his final years to begin digging through the special collections in order to piece together the story of Pan Am Flight 73 and the crew who saved all but 20 of the 350 passengers. This story is based on true events, although it is told through the eyes of a fictional character.

Before his death, Jennifer's father read her narrative and was pleased that it had been conveyed, but he believed there was too much technical detail about the airplane that had been left out. The beauty of storytelling is that everyone tells their own version of the truth.
