Very Brave Dog by Linda Newbery
Little dog Barney lives on a narrowboat with his owner, Jim. The pair are inseparable - until they get separated. Barney loves his life on the canals but the one thing he's frightened of is tunnels. So when Jim sets off into a tunnel without him, Barney is distraught. Luckily, another boat owner gives him a ride through the tunnel. When he gets to the other end Jim's boat is moored up - but Jim isn't on it! And in their efforts to be reunited, man and dog just keep missing each other until poor Barney is completely worn out. However, finally brave dog Barney has to overcome his fear and enter the nasty tunnel - alone.
First in a set of stories about Barney, a brown and white dog, who lives on a narrow boat – it’s a great beginningThe adorable dog on the cover will attract young readers and the tale inside will enchant them. At first the plot chugs along like the Whistling Jack itself, as we see the journey through Barney’s ears, eyes and nose. Then, when he gets left at a lock by Jim, his beloved owner – a mistake of course – tension mounts and the pace increases. Will Jim and Barney ever find each other? Dare Barney go through the dreaded dark tunnel all by himself? Soon Barney is dizzy with muddlement – one of several linguistic delights – but he never gives up. Nearly confident readers (with a little help) will discover the pleasures of a realistic, zap-free story well told. * Carousel magazine *
There's tension. There's drama and there's excitement. There's a warm heart to the story too... It's a delightful story which will appeal to boys and girls. It'll be reread and enjoyed and besides having the pleasure of a book under their belt the aspiring reader is going to realize that this reading lark is fun. * The Book Bag *
You can tell from the writing and some of the unexpected and brilliant pieces of language that these books aren’t written by a run-of-the-mill author, and the stories are tightly written and interestingly plotted, building up to key moments and not taking the first and most obvious turn each time. * Armadillo *
