Victoria College by Julie Kerr

When Mrs Margaret Byers founded the Establishment for the Boarding and Education of Young Ladies in Belfast in 1859, she believed fervently that her pupils deserved a comprehensive education, equal to that offered to boys. Since those early days, the school she began has flourished, and Victoria College Belfast - named for Queen Victoria in her jubilee year - has become renowned for excellence in girls' education. "Victoria College Belfast: The First 150 Years" celebrates all aspects of life at the school, from the first days when most girls' schools only taught singing, piano playing and perhaps a little French, through two world wars and the Troubles, to the present when pupils enjoy a full and varied education with every modern facility and opportunity. Remaining faithful to its founder's principles, while always adapting to and moving with the times, Victoria College has maintained its place at the forefront of education for 150 years. This book brings together memories, reminiscences and photographs to create a fascinating and lively portrait of one of the UK's oldest girls' schools.
Julie Kerr was a pupil at Victoria College Belfast between 1976 and 1990. She is currently an honorary research fellow at the University of St Andrews, researcher for the Monastic Wales Project and is involved in a community project on Balmerino Abbey, Fife. She is presently co-authoring a book on the Cistercians with Professor Janet Burton. Julie lives in Edinburgh.
