This title examines the lives, crimes, punishments, and backgrounds of over fifty men, women and children held in Newcastle Gaol 1871-1873. It looks at the social conditions, the state of the local police, and at prison conditions.
Barry Redfern in a retired Chief Superintendent of Northumbria Police. He is the author of The Shadow of the Gallows which was winner of an Alan Ball Local History Award.
