This album contains the violin part for nine pieces from ABRSM's Grade 1 Violin syllabus for 20122015. Features three pieces from each of Lists A, B and C providing appealing and varied repertoire from which to create a balanced programme for the exam or a concert. At Grade 1, I confess I was a little disappointedOne of my bug-bears has long been that the greatest challenge at this level is to consolidate two different fingering patterns and to understand that both constitute the same combination of tones and semitones which comprise a major scale. New for this grade is a one-octave naturalminor scale on E; this starts on a first finger and there is a neat explanation of this on the ABRSM's website. Anything which encourages pupils to think analytically and connect the theorywith the practicalhas to be a good thing and, in combining the first and second finger patterns enables the pupil to feel the links between this and its G major counterpart, which is obviously a very logical move. The other notable change at all grades is the option of playing scales with even notes (at grades 1 to 3). ESTA
