Virgin or Vamp by Helen Benedict
Although sex-related crimes are popular fodder for the press, little attention has been paid to the manner in which the press approach and cover such crimes. This sociological study examines recent cases and exposes myths and assumptions about the media.Helen Benedict, a Columbia University journalism professor, has written extensively on women, race, and justice. Virgin or Vamp: How the Press Covers Sexual Crimes, as well as the novels The Opposite of Love, The Sailor's Wife, Bad Angel, and A World Like This, are among her works. The James Aronson Prize for Social Justice Journalism was given to her for her reporting on soldiers.
