Ray's work is ruthless in its condemnation of social problems, injustice, and corruption in power and politics' back alleys. She has received various state, national, and international prizes, including the (1) Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel Shilapadma (about Konark temple), (2) Bharatiya Jnanapith Trust's Moorti Devi Award (1991) for her novel Jajnaseni (she is the only woman writer in India to receive this award to date), (3) Sahitya Akademi Award (2000), and (4) Padma Shree (8) Kalinga Ratna Title, 2014 (9) Honorary D.Lit. She has written 23 novels, 28 short story collections, ten travelogues on various countries, ten books for children, ten books for Neo-literates, one essay collection, one biography in English, one book of lyrics and two poetry collections, and one collection of tribal myths (about five primitive tribes of Odisha). Her autobiography, Living on Lotus Leaf, has received a lot of praise. Her short stories and novels have been adapted into films and television series on a national scale. Hema Malini, a well-known Indian actress and dancer, performed the book Jajnaseni on the Stage Ballet.
On speaking tours, she has traveled over 40 countries. Her works have been translated into a number of Indian languages, as well as English and a number of other languages. She is the Founding Chairman of two national literary organizations, 'Bhashayan' and 'Pratibha Ray Foundation Trust,' both dedicated to the promotion of all languages and literature.
