The Wages of Sin by J M Gregson
When a novice young prostitute is killed in the town of Brunton after only her first night, Inspector Peach tries to solve the crime by interviewing some of the other, more experienced, local prostitutes - and their customers. Discovering that these include a divorced policeman from a nearby station, and a Catholic priest at odds with his beliefs. Peach realizes he must tread carefully. As his superiors put pressure on him to clean up Brunton's reputation. Peach finds himself caught up in the seediest parts of town, increasingly determined to catch the girl's killer.
