Wagner Handbook by Ulrich Muller
A guide to understanding Wagner's music, his artistic development and the impact of his ideas in his own time and in succeeding generations. It provides a chronological overview of Wagner's operas, chapters on each important aspect of his music, accounts of his cultural relationships and more.
This is an extensive collection of essays on German composer Richard Wagner’s career, cultural relationships, and psychologyThe contributors, most of whom are considered among the world’s leading Wagner experts, also discuss such pertinent subjects as the political exploitation of Wagner’s work by the Nazis. The superb volume, originally published in German as Wagner Handbuch in 1986, is nearly exhaustive in scope. Each essay was rendered in English by a different translator, and esteemed translation editor Deathridge (music, King’s Coll.) is responsible for the compilation’s cohesiveness. -- James E.
