It analyses the military practices and capabilities of the Romans and their northern enemies, at policy, strategic, operational, and tactical levels, and covers civil wars, sieges, and naval warfare. Dr Elton analyses in depth the issue of barbarization, and shows that it did not affect the efficiency of the Roman army. Other sections of the book discuss organization, fortifications, and equipment.

Elton, Hugh: - Hugh Elton is Professor and Program Coordinator in the Program of Greek and Roman Studies at Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. A scholar of Late Roman political and military history, he has directed two archaeological projects in Turkey. He is the author of Warfare in Roman Europe, AD 350-425 (1998) and Frontiers of the Roman Empire (2012).
