The Watch Tower by Elizabeth Harrower

Set in the leafy northern suburbs of Sydney during the 1940s, The Watch Tower is a novel of relentless and acute psychological power. Following their father's death, Laura and Clare are withdrawn from their elite private boarding school by their mother. As their mother slowly withdraws from them, the two are left to fend for themselves. Laura's boss Felix is there to help, even offering to marry Laura if she will have him. However Felix is not all that he seems and little by little the two sisters grow complicit with his obsessions, his cruelty and his need to control.

Elizabeth Harrower was born in Sydney in 1928, but she and her family moved to Newcastle when she was eleven years old. Harrower relocated to London in 1951. She went on a lot of trips and started writing fiction. Her debut novel, Down in the City, was released in 1957, and The Long Prospect was published the following year. She returned to Sydney in 1959 and began working for the ABC and the Sydney Morning Herald as a book reviewer.

Her only novel not set in Sydney, The Catherine Wheel, was released in 1960. It recounts the story of an Australian law student in London. In 1966, The Watch Tower was released. She worked for Macmillan in publishing from 1961 to 1967. Harrower continued to produce short fiction but no further novels were published.

Her work is spartan, clever, and merciless in its portrayals of men and women. Several of her colleagues admired her, notably Patrick White and Christina Stead, and she is without a doubt one of Australia's most prominent postwar writers. Elizabeth Harrower is a Sydney-based writer. Fiona McGregor is a performance artist and author from Sydney.

He has written five books and she writes novels, articles, short stories, and reviews. Indelible Ink is her most recent book.
