The Way of the Grizzly by Tom Walker
Alaska's McNeil River State Game Sanctuary has world-wide appeal. Nowhere on earth do so many bears congregate in such large numbers. At the peak of the chum salmon run, approximately 125 bears can be found within a one-to-two-mile radius of McNeil River falls. Even more astounding is the extraordinary mix of humans and bears in the sanctuary. Huge bears weighing up to 1400 pounds pass close to humans, seemingly ignoring them just a few feet away as they conduct their unique day-to-day behaviours. Now 'The Way of the Grizzly' (originally published in hardcover as 'River of Bears'), the first book to fully document this remarkable place, examines the unique behaviour, social structure, basic biology, and extraordinary human-bear relationship in this world-famous sanctuary. The book delves into the natural history of the area before sanctuary status up to the present day-detailing the challenge that commercial development poses for the sanctuary's future. Renowned freelance wildlife writer Tom Walker and wildlife photographer Larry Aumiller, 'the Dian Fossey of bears', share extensive insights and vivid photographs gleaned from almost twenty years of study.
