The Way Things Were by Denis Cassidy

The Way Things Were is a moving personal account of growing up in working-class Newcastle between 1933 and 1952. It describes a way of life that was not unique to the Cassidy family and their neighbours, but one that was shared by millions in urban Britain. Most people born between the two world wars will recognise the picture painted of urban society at this time, where many families were denied choice and opportunity by daily financial pressures; but despite this a spirit of optimism pervaded everyday life. Denis Cassidy's story is an atmospheric and vividly captured reminder of how much life has changed in the last seventy years.
Denis Cassidy grew up in a working-class district of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the 1930s and '40s. He began work as an office junior in 1949, but a varied career in business led to directorships of BAA and SEEBOARD, as well as chairmanships of BHS, Storehouse, Boddingtons, Liberty and Newcastle United. Currently Denis is a director of Compass Group and Forever Broadcasting. This is his first book.
