The Way We Live by Kathleen Jamie
The way we live was Kathleen Jame's first full-length collection, following her pamphlet, Black Spiders (1982) and her collaboration with Andrew Greig, A Flame in Your Heart (1986). It includes Karkoram Highway, a remarkable set of poems written on the hoof in the wilds of northern Pakistan, as well as her much anthologised title-poem, 'The way we live'.
Kathleen Jamie has the fantastic capacity to put herself into the mind of somebody many, many years older, with an entirely different set of experiences.. It's a very formidable mind as well as a formidable art. -- Owen Dudley Edwards * Critics' Forum, BBC Radio 4 *
She can make unrhetorical language glow with mystery. It is seldom that one reads a gifted poet whose work stands aside from the currents of the day... Caution suggests that one should speak of promise, but Kathleen Jamie writes so convincingly already that one's duty is just to read her poems. -- Peter Porter * Observer *
