The Wayland Book of Common British Trees by Theresa Greenaway
This book introduces approximately 70 common British trees and shrubs that children might see in their street, park or garden. There are full descriptions of the trees' shape, leaves, seeds and flowers and whether the trees were native to Britain or have been introduced. The book tells children how to identify each tree by looking at the shape of its crown, or by studying its leaves, bark, flowers or cones. Activities at the end show how easy it is to plant a tree yourself, and how to help look after the trees around you. It includes tips on how to become a tree detective, how to make leaf rubbings to make your own identification guide, how to successfully plant a tree and how to tell the age of a tree.
'Altogether this is a useful addition for KS2 and 3 pupils, provided other books in the library give more detailed advice on the scientific recognition of species' -- School Library Association Vol 50 No 3 Autumn 2002 'Useful for identification, the book provides a good photo, a description and scientific information for each entry ... Very professional as well as readable and attractive.' -- Carousel, Spring 2003 'It is an excellent guide and includes details of the shape, leaves, seeds and flowers of each species featured, illustrated with superb colour photographs.' -- Sussex Life 20020701
