This pioneering post-colonial novel was the first break-through Moroccan novel to be written in native Moroccan Arabic. The story follows two generations of the al-Tihamis family whose members characterise distinctive aspects of Moroccan society, and whose lives reflect the profound social changes taking place during the period.Abd al-karim Ghallab (1919-2006) was a Moroccan political journalist and novelist. He is the author of five novels and three collections of short stories. In 2004 he was awarded the Maghreb Culture Prize of Tunis. Gallab's novels have been translated into many languages. Roger Allen is professor emeritus of Arabic language and literature at the University of Pennsylvania.
