Anthony Gibson has lived and worked in the West Country all his life. He is best known for the pivotal role that he played as South West Regional Director for the National Farmers' Union in the two great farming crises of the past 40 years: BSE and the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease epidemic. He was a key player in resolving the seminal clashes between farming and conservation on Exmoor and the Somerset Levels and in negotiating environmental management agreements covering vast areas of Dartmoor. Besides all that, he has found time to campaign for traditional cider and real ale, to champion West Country food and drink, to explore the relationship between great writers and the West Country landscape and to become the BBC's 'voice of Somerset cricket'. Anthony Gibson was born at Totnes in 1949, the elder son of the broadcaster and cricket writer Alan Gibson and of Olwen Gibson, who taught English for many years at Plympton Grammar School. He read History at The Queen's College, Oxford, and spent most of his working life championing West Country farming and food with the National Farmers' Union. He now spends his summers commentating on Somerset cricket for the BBC and his winters writing. Among his books are 'Of Didcot and the Demon', the MCC/Cricket Society Book of the Year in 2010, and two volumes - 'With Magic in my Eyes' and 'The Coloured Counties' - which explore the relationship between landscape and literature. He has honorary degrees from the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, is a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies and was awarded the OBE for services to the rural community. He lives with his second wife, Claire, at Langport on the Somerset Levels and has three children, Joanna, Rebecca and George, and five grandchildren.
