Hirata Atsutane has been the subject of numerous studies that focus on his importance to nationalist politics and Japanese intellectual and social history. This book focuses on Senkyo ibun (1822), a work on Atsutane's interviews with a 14-year-old Edo street urchin named Tengu Kozo Torakichi who claimed to be an apprentice tengu.
Wilburn Hansen is assistant professor of Japanese religions at San Diego State University.
