When Your Life Depends on It by Brad Borkan

Grab a warm blanket. This book puts you right into the action of the life-and-death decisions made by early Antarctic explorers. It is filled with unforgettable stories about the challenges and decisions they faced on the ice.

While we might not be pulling sledges across Antarctica in the early 1900s, this book also reveals valuable lessons in leadership, team work, and sheer grit and determination that can help all of us make better decisions in our lives today.

In When Your Life Depends on It, you'll discover:

  • 11 of the greatest survival stories in the history of exploration
  • How to make decisions fast without feelings of doubt or guilt
  • How to improve your team and leadership skills, which are valuable in any profession.
  • When it is right to take a big risk.
  • How to succeed against all odds

Co-written by a decision scientist and an Antarctic historian, When Your Life Depends on It is filled with tales of resilience that resonate with people who love travel and adventure as well as those seeking insights into human behavior. It reveals the mind-set of the brave men who risked, and in some cases gave their lives, for science, discovery and exploration.

A remarkable book

Sir Ranulph Fiennes -- the greatest Polar explorer in our lifetime

The Polar book of the year

Jonathan Shackleton -- descendant of Ernest Shackleton

David Hirzel has known the name of Tom Crean since first reading the young adult abridgment (Shackleton's Valiant Voyage) of Alfred Lansing's Endurance about the age of ten. He began writing Tom Crean's story in 1995, and eventually in 2011 published Sailor on Ice about Crean's adventures with Scott's Terra Nova expedition, and in 2013 Hold Fast, a continuation of that story. The present volume, Antarctic Voyager, takes the reader all the way back to the beginning of Tom Crean's polar career, and the chance opportunity to go south from New Zealand into a part of our earth that had yet to be explored. This book seeks to explore the unseen forces that shape us in our young lives as they shaped him in his, in ways we cannot know until we have lived them fully. During the course of researching these books, Mr. Hirzel has become the leader of the Hyde Street Living History Players at San Francisco Maritime National Park. He currently writes from Sky Ranch overlooking the sea in Pacifica CA where he designs houses.
