Before becoming a full-time photographer and writer, he worked as a forest officer in the United Kingdom and as a conservation officer with the Tasmanian Conservation Trust. His other books include Kangaroos and Wallabies of Australia, The Best of Australian Birds, Tasmanian Mammals: A Field Guide' and A Field Guide to Tasmanian Birds.
