The concepts masculine and feminine may have undergone steady erosion since the heyday of he-man Tarzan. George Walden is a polymath who counts Russian, Chinese and French among his many languages. Before he became a well-known columnist, reviewer and polemicist, he worked in the Foreign Office and was a conservative MP for fifteen years until 97. His previous books include Lucky George (1999). Jules Barbey, known as the French Walter Scott, met Beau Brummell after his escape to France. George Walden here provides the first complete translation of his celebrated Brummell portrait, previously only available in Bowdlerised editions.
