The Whole Story by Johanna Spyri
First published in 1881, "Heidi" is the tale of an orphan growing up in the Swiss Alps and Frankfurt. Heidi has a gift for happiness which transforms the lives of those around her, such as the crippled Clara who she teaches to walk. Informative side panels help children put the story into context.
Johanna Spyri (1827-1902) was born in Switzerland in the village of Hirzel, which has magnificent views of the Alps. She wrote almost fifty books, but it was Heidi who brought her great fame.
