Whose Land? Whose Promise? by Gary M Burge
A passionate inter-weaving of modern stories, historical study and biblical and theological insight in the quest for justice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Whose Land? Whose Promise? is a passionate and personal set of reflections about the crisis in the Middle East, born out of personal experience, historical and theological study. Untold and heartbreaking stories from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are combined with the insights of a biblical scholar with a passion for justice. Burge wrestles with questions such as: - How do I embrace my commitment to Judaism, a commitment to which I am bound by the Bible, when I sense in my deepest being that there is a profound injustice about Israel? - How do I celebrate the birth of this nation Israel when I also mourn the suffering of Arab Christians who are equally my brothers and sisters in Christ? - How do I love those Palestinian Muslims who are deeply mis understood by all parties in this conflict? This book is a powerful, prophetic call for justice that all Christians with an interest in the Middle East ought to ponder carefully.
'Tough questions with robust responsesProfessor Burge combines in a unique way both the honesty of someone struggling with the realities of Israel today and the discipline of a New Testament academic committed to responding in the light of Scripture. The Land's problems and its people, scripture and its message - all come vividly to life in this provocative book. A powerful story and a passionate argument.' Peter Walker, Lecturer in New Testament at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. 'Christians must love modern Israel the way Isaiah and Amos loved their people and their land, passionately arguing for national righteousness and weeping over injustice and moral decay. Whose Land? Whose Promise? is an excellent introduction to the complications of geography, history and geopolitics that have wounded and weakened both Israelis and Palestinians. But above all the book challenges us to love and to love concretely. David Neff, Editor of Christianity Today.
