Diana Winston is the director of Mindfulness Education at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) and coauthor of Completely Present: The Science, Art, and Practice of Mindfulness (DaCapo, 2010) with Dr Susan Smalley. She is a well-known instructor and speaker who promotes health and well-being by teaching mindful awareness skills to the general population. She has taught mindfulness in a number of locations since 1993, including hospitals, universities, organizations, nonprofits, schools in the United States and Asia, and online, according to the Los Angeles Times. She created the Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) curriculum, which is based on research, and the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation, which teaches mindfulness teachers all around the world. The New York Times, O, The Oprah Magazine, Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, Allure, Women's Health, and a variety of periodicals, books, and journals have all acknowledged or quoted her work.
She's also the author of Wide Awake: A Buddhist Handbook for Youth (Perigee Books, 2003) and the audio program Mindful Meditations, as well as a number of mindfulness-related publications. Diana is a member of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center's Teacher's Council in Northern California. Since 1989, she has been practicing mindfulness meditation, including a year spent as a Buddhist nun in Burma. Diana's most difficult and gratifying practice right now is attempting to parent an eight-year-old consciously.
