Will Pop Eat Itself? by Jeremy J Beadle
The author is an opera critic and music fan who, in this book, explores the advent of post modernism in pop, suggesting a whole range of parallels between pop today and "high art" earlier this century. Central to this story is an musical instrument called the "sampler" which uses existing recordings and original stuff to make a new patchwork of sound. Beginning in the 1980s as an unappreciated oddity, the sampler started a moribund music scene through the work of "The KLF" and "Pump Up the Volume". This book describes the practice and reprecussions of sampling, and traces the fascinating history of the pop producer.Jeremy Beadle was responsible for some of the funniest and most memorable moments on British television for nearly two decades. He is also a well-known quizzer. His love of trivia and quizzes prompted him to write the huge 'Toay's the Day - A Chronicle of the Curious,' and he scripted a daily cartoon series of the same name in the Daily Express for nearly two years. He devised and hosted The Atlantic Grill, London's most talked about and tough quiz, and was a biggets contributor for the successful Book of Lists (1,2,3) and People's Almanac (1,2,3). He won 'Nobody Likes a Smartarse' and 'Celebrity Mastermind' with his true crime knowledge. He currently writes Beadle's Miscellany, an expectedly difficult but enormously popular quiz for the Saturday Independent's color supplement.
