William Temple by Stephen Spencer

This book explores the life and work of William Temple, and is written to coincide with his founding of the diocese of Blackburn 75 years ago while he was Bishop of Manchester. It describes his childhood, education, ordination, work as headmaster of Repton school, rector of St James' Picadilly and work for the Life and Liberty movement. The story continues, to cover his ministry as Bishop of Manchester, Archbishop of York and his brief but influential time as Archbishop of Canterbury during the Second World War.
"What Stephen Spencer makes so clear, and it is just one area where the book cuts new ground, are the theological roots of Temple's socio-political creed..set out succinctly and comprehensively." Frank Field MP
Stephen Spencer currently serves as vicar to the parish of St Paul's Caton in the diocese of Blackburn and as deputy principal of the Carlisle and Blackburn Diocesan Training Institute. He has researched the social thought of William Temple at Oxford and has also published several articles on him, since finishing his research.
