This is a moving novel about the greatest love affair in Irish history. WB Yeats was one of Ireland's greatest poets; Maud Gonne was a beautiful, upper class Protestant English woman. From the moment they met Yeats fell deeply in love. Yet throughout his life she rejected his marriage proposals. As he embarked on passionate affairs with society women, and eventually married one, she continued to influence and inspire much of his work.
Barry Shortall was born in Liverpool of Irish parents. His great grandfather was a friend of the Fenian, John O'Leary. His grandfather joined the Royal Irish Constabulary(RIC), was shot and invalided out. His mother was a cousin of the executed patriot, Kevin Barry. He currently works in third-level education.
