Wine Book by Jonathan Pedley

The choice of wines available has increased hugely over the last 10 years and it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep abreast of all the varied wine producers and countries. New Wine Guide is a straightforward, but not patronising, introduction to wine the world over. Aimed at those who like to drink wine but would like to know a bit more about what they're drinking, the book will feature the best value wines up to the mid-range in terms of price. In his New Wine Guide, wine master and TV presenter Jonathan Pedley demystifies what's in the bottle, and translates the new global language of wine. The first section deals with the practicalities of enjoying wine. Buying it, storing it, serving it, drinking it and choosing food to go with it. However, the most important element in this section will be about how to get the most out of tasting wine. The second section runs through the business of growing grapes and making wine. Rather than just describing the production process as an end in itself, constant reference will be made to the way apparently arcane decisions in the vineyard and winery affect the flavour of the liquid we drink. The third section is a tour of the world's wine-producing countries and will reflect the growing importance of the New World countries in many markets. The final section will give readers ideas about how they can further their understanding and enjoyment of wine (or recover from its after-effects). And there's a useful information section on such things as jargon, web sites, and wine schools.

Jonathan Pedley first became interested in wine while studying Biochemistry at Oxford. He spent periods in buying, sales, marketing and distribution for Grants of St James’s before getting involved in the re-establishing of the School of Wine. Jonathan passed the Master of Wine Course in 1992 and two years later became self employed. He now divides his time between running courses for the wine trade, lecturing, consultancy and writing, and was co-author, with Keith Floyd, of Floyd Uncorked (HarperCollins 1998).
