The Wisdom We're Born With by Daniel Gottlieb
What if the things you imagine will make you happy won't? If what you really need is not what you think you need? The author, who suffered a traumatic injury that left him a quadriplegic over 30 years ago, is uniquely qualified to offer wise counsel on the relationship between what we want and what we have. For me, climate change raises a slew of difficulties. In the mid-eighties, it began as a curiosity for me. I kept coming back to studies that showed negative feedback loops were dissipating while positive feedback loops remained, and in some cases were intensifying. I became increasingly concerned, as a biologist, about the potential detrimental side effects of excessive greenhouse gases (GHGs) on humans. Suddenly it became clear that we weren't prioritizing human-caused climate change high enough on our national agenda.
Some interests, in fact, were downplaying the incident. And thus is my first objection to human forcing of the radiative balance: What kind of jerks battle the facts in order to enrich themselves--at the expense of others' misery? Of course, I had to give up my status as a Silicon Valley playboy as a result. Do you know how angry I was when I went from yuppie to earth muffin?
I foolishly believed that by contributing clarity and intelligence to the climate debate, The Galileo Syndrome would make a difference. It was even utilized as an environmental philosophy textbook in college... So, what's the point? A satire about insane individuals arguing about environmental issues.
The Fires of Home, my third book, is about the tipping point and how the planet's surplus held energy might irreversibly alter the human experience. There had to be a way to appeal to dirtbags' humanity in some way.
