She teaches creative writing in alternative schools, trains adolescents in outdoor skills, and sits on the board of directors for a youth treatment center as part of her community work. Harper has been a martial artist for many years and enjoys hiking, kayaking, sailing, and other outdoor activities. She also cooks, paints in watercolors and oils, creates stone sculptures, plays the violin, and composes music.
