This book for beginner crocheters is compact and attractive, full of practical information and some useful patterns, It starts with equipment and yarns, basic stitches and techniquesThe publishers describe it as a 'skill building guide' The new stitches and techniques you learn can be put to use in the first pattern, fingerless gloves (in three sizes) made with (UK) double stitch before you learn some more. Later patterns are for butning, a scarf, granny square cushions, fox toy, pillowcase edgings and more. Throughout the book is excellent and how you make hte stitches is clearly show with step-by-step photo instructions. The photos use bright coloured yarns against a plain background so you can see exactly what is happening and projects are properly displayed so you can see where the pattern is taking you. Any new crocheter who worked right through this book would be an accomplished crocheter at the end with not only the command of the basics but also many useful stitches and techniques and experience of making a wide range of crochet work.

There is so much information held in each section to help you learn new stitches and techniques. Then at the end of the section you have a few projects for you to practice what you have learned. At the very end of each section is a beautiful array of pictures to inspire to create more amazing things with your crochet. The first section is essential skills, covering
all the basics. The 2nd section is working in the round. Then it's onto stitch patterns which teaches you everything from raised stitches to shells and fans. The fourth section then covers finishing touches.
This includes everything from button holes to crochet cords, to edgings. Last but not least is the taking your skills further section. This is the fun section for me where you get to learn tunisian crochet, hairpin lace & broomstick crochet. There is a lot of information held within the book and clear and easy to follow
instructions. There are also an amazing amount of pictures to help you with your projects and learning
new stitches and techniques.
A skill-building book that teaches you to crochet. Useful for beginners upwards. This book contains how-to photographs and easy to follow instructions for quick and easy projects. Guest crochet designers share inspiration. This book is divided into Essential Skills providing all the basics; Working In The Round; Stitch Patterns; Finishing Touches and Taking Your Skills Further. I find the front cover photos a bit of a let down but the information inside provides the best explanation of how to crochet from counting stitches to holding yarn to reading patterns and charts. It makes it all so easy. Even in the basics section, interesting stitches are introduced, which is fantastic. There are 3 projects in this section and I love the guest designer scarf. The ‘be inspired’ section is also good. This basics section is about one third of the book and if you have never crocheted, this book is worth buying for that alone. Working in the round includes the inevitable granny squares but also tubular crochet and a lovely fox pattern. I adore stitches so I loved the stitch section, which includes some great 3-dimensional stitches and colourwork too. The popcorn purses look like a great little project. The next section is about buttonholes and edgings and I love the flower blanket. The final section includes broomstick and Tunisian crochet and some fab inspiration. Overall, a great book, Recommended for beginners and up.

The intital chapter covers basic crochet skills- stitches, tension, shaping, finishing - while the following chapters each examine more indepth skills. Projects from Tracey and guest designers including Stephanie Lau and Ali Campbell help illustrate the skills as they're explained, while clear, full-colour photographs take you through every step.
